“WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, is an international charity dedicated to the conservation and welfare of whales, dolphins and porpoises worldwide.   Established in 1987, and with offices in the UK , USA , Australia , Germany and Argentina , WDCS works to reduce and ultimately eliminate the continuing threats to cetaceans and their habitats, while striving to raise awareness of these remarkable animals and the need to protect them in their natural environment.  We achieve these objectives through a mix of campaigning, conservation, research, education and awareness raising initiatives.  Contact WDCS in the US at: WDCS-US, 7 Nelson Street , Plymouth , MA   02360   508-746-2522

The Year of the Dolphin campaign focuses on raising awareness of dolphins in the wild, the threats they face to their survival and actions that could help with their conservation and protection of their habitats and ecosystems.  As the campaign was developed under the aegis of the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species, whose mandate is the conservation of migratory wildlife, the campaign does not address or deal with captivity issues.

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (also known as CMS or Bonn Convention) aims to conserve terrestrial, marine and avian migratory species throughout their range. It is an intergovernmental treaty, concluded under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme, concerned with the conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale. Since the Convention's entry into force, its membership has grown steadily to include 101 (as of 1January 2007) Parties from Africa, Central and South America, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
